Is Your Child Hitting A Wall???

Come To the Coffee & Tea with Mr. “B” to get answers and help

At the beginning of the school year there is due diligence by parents to ensure that everything for their child is in place for optimal learning, success and that the year starts smoothly. Parents also take heed to make certain that their child’s teachers are aware of any additional needs their child may have.

Kids put their nose to the grind-stone after a summer of leisure as they get back into the swing of school.  Books to cover-last minute items needed for class-lunches to make…and the school year is off and running with students in-gear and everyone settling into their daily grind.

Homework…projects…tests…school clubs…study buddies come and go.  Open house…mid marking period conferences all just seem to fly by.  Before you know it, everyone is consumed with their day-to-day world and the holidays are approaching.  Little by little you notice your child’s Homework Graph is slipping -100%  95%  87%.   Then there’s a call from the teacher.   It could be that your child is distracted with the upcoming holidays.

The holidays come and go.  Now, not only are your child’s homework graphs continuing to tank, but so are their test scores!  Grades that had you beaming with pride – 90 – 100 – 85- 92 – are now making you cringe causing great alarm – 65 – 70 – 43 – 20.  You ask your child what’s happening.  Mostly they say, “I dunno.”  So you take away the Wii, the Ipod and TV.  However, there is no improvement.  You reach out to contact the teacher by phone, by email and in person.  You try calling out to your child’s case manager and with all the talking and intervening, your child is still having trouble!

Perhaps extra supports are needed for your child.  Or, you may be inquiring for the first time about what additional services are available through the school district and most importantly, how do you get those services and extra supports in place to help your child?

On Thursday, January 8 at 9:15am, you can bring your questions and concerns regarding your child’s education, services or extra supports to C.H.I.L.D.’s  yearly coveted event, Coffee and Tea with Mr. “B” featuring Tom Beese, Director of Special Services for Scotch Plains-Fanwood Schools.  Mr. Beese will answer your questions, explain your options to get help and the educational services available.  He will also share, where applicable, the future plans of the district and any state or legislative changes that could impact the entire Scotch Plains-Fanwood school district, let alone student services and special education in general.  This program sheds light on and will explain how you can help your child, regardless of the town you live in.  PLEASE CALL TO RSVP AND CONFIRM LOCATION AT 908.322.4020 to guarantee your seat.

What Happens To Student Rights In College?

On Tuesday, January 20 at 7:30pm at Park Middle School,  CHILD's program will be addressing, What Happens To Student Rights In CollegeOur speaker, Elizabeth Cohen Hamblet, M.ed., M.A.T. will be presenting.

As a NJ State-Certified LD Consultant, Ms. Hamblet has served for over 10 years at the post-secondary level, most recently at Rutgers.  Her experience working with students and families at that level,  whom were misinformed and/or were not aware of how different the environment for student or disability services is,  prompted her to develop a special presentation about the transition to college for students with any kind of learning difference or disability.  Her talk covers in-depth the differences in laws governing services at college and their real-life application for students.  Topics include:

Documentation
Identification
Differences in Accommodation

Parent Involvement

Disclosure
Access VS Success

Her presentation is designed for mixed groups of parents and students as well as to professionals and staff at the high school.

She will provide suggestions and methods to use for college searches for successful preparation for students who currently attend 11 and 12th grade.

Also covered will be specific procedures and options for families and students in 9 and 10th grade to start thinking about while there is still time.

So that we can prepare appropriately for this evening, it helps us if you can please RSVP to attend by calling  908.322.4020.
